One of the most well received collections from Caribbean Fashion Week was the funky eighties inspired swimwear line WETswim from songstress Denyque. The collection contained a vivid assortment of bright colours with sharp edges that revealed maximum curvature on a woman’s body. Her Julan collection was both young and funky, combining sheer fabrics with royal prints in various diaphanous forms. Veteran Jamaican Designer, Barry Moncrieffe, showed a collection of candy-coloured designs in polka dots and stripes on Saturday as a headlining designer to Juliette Dyke’s Julan collection. Combining bows with bouffant hats, the “Moncrieffe” collection varied in style, with a stronger inclination for more mature styles in knee length skirts and matching blazers, maxi dresses… Read more »
Canadian designer Yiannis Koveos explored the female body for his “Yannis K Couture” collection of swimwear. Using a hard form shell to cover the breast and bottoms, the collection evoked Princess Leila in Return of the Jedi. Likely uncomfortable and awkwardly tailored, the swimwear may be best left to the professionals in the film industry.
American designer Yvonne Jewnell is only seventeen but has lofty design goals and while her collection of drop waisted pants and asymmetrical shirt dresses was not particularly our cup of tea it grained her the award fro CFW 2014 “emerging designer of the year”. One of the strongest collections from Saturday night at CFW came from Jamaican designer Jehan Jackson for her “Vain Glory” collection of tropical prints, fresh swimwear and rattan hats. We saw runway sweeping gowns from emerging Tobagonian designer Diamond Linton whose collection entitled “Tobago Gyal” played with layers of fabric and flirty frills. Using themes of tropical landscapes for her collection, emerging designer Kristen Benjamin from Trinidad & Tobago created mens and womenswear designs that stayed true to their caribbean roots with board shorts for guys and skin-baring ensembles for women. Designer Joris Hendrik from Belize showed her collection of mature womenswear at Saturday’s event, focusing on jewel tones in conservative forms and simple silhouettes.
