On The Radar: Four Makeup Looks to Try This Summer

Sheer shadow and neon eyeliner.

Summer has arrived, ultimately making makeup application a difficult albeit sweaty task. Just when we’re ready to throw in the towel and bare our naked faces to the world, makeup artist and fashion journalist Tameka “Tsansai” Coley saves the day with a few summer makeup must-dos. Follow these few tips to keep your skin looking fresh and clean during the endlessly humid summer days.

Phew, feel that heat? The summer is upon us and you know what that means… time to turn up your make-up and skincare game. You want to rock the ‘flyest’ looks for the season, but you don’t want to neglect your skin in the process. After all, it is the body’s largest organ. My first and most important tip for the summer is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Drink more water (coconut water is great too) than you usually do, because the increased heat is zapping it faster than you can blink, and there’s nothing less cute than dehydrated skin… you definitely don’t want to draw attention to that with your makeup.

You also need to cleanse, tone and moisturize twice daily (in that order) and wear sunblock with a rating of SPF 40 and over (no matter your skin type), because that’s how you ensure that your working base (i.e. your skin) is always in great condition. This really helps your makeup to look more flawless every time and, of course, that’s what we’re about. So without further ado, let’s dive into the four must-do makeup looks for this summer, with a little celeb and runway inspiration.

Bare beauty on Jeneil with a pop of colour on the lid.

1.) Neon Pops of Colour – This summer is all about raw, healthy beauty. Go with the bare essentials – a little foundation/concealer on your problem areas, a dab of powder to set it all in and bronzer along the cheekbones for a goddess glow. Finish it off with a slightly glossy nude lip and a pop of neon under the eyes. Viola! Instant, unexpected glam.

A healthy glow with a graphic eyeliner.

2.) Not a Fan of Neon? Try this Instead– Work the healthy glow look with strong brows, vamp lashes and graphic eyeliner. You can even skip the eyeliner completely and go for a sheer, girly shade on your lids. Totally seductive!

Smokey eye and nude lip.

3.) A Balanced Smokey Eye– Not your typical summer-y look, but hey… do it right and you can’t go wrong. Up the ante on a traditional dark smokey eye by layering a bit of sheen atop your smoke area, then balance it with a little cheek contouring and a sexy-as-hell nude lip a la Rihanna at the CFDA Awards. See? It just works.

4.) Haute Lips– Summer is usually about lighter, brighter colours, but this one will allow us gals to play around a bit more. Remember the aim is really to be as naturally fabulous as possible and to build your make-up look around one area, so why not highlight those lips? Go bold with a vibrant colour for daytime and an almost bare face, then think Maleficent for your night out on the town. Slick your hair back and trade in those rainbow shades for something dark and seductive – a rich crimson, glossy plum or tantalising oxblood. Va-va-voom!
