Every Friday in our column “Style Selec’tings” Kingstonstyle’s Fashion Editor, E. Hansen-McKnight, scours the web to give you the week’s best in clothing and accessories from web-savvy Jamaican stores and designers.
If you are still out there in the streets trying to hunt down an outfit for this holiday weekend, well, you are probably either a.) A procrastinator or b.) Incredibly busy. Don’t be distraught, there are still some excellent options our there if you’re looking to whip an outfit together quick for whatever party/event you’re hitting up. This week on Style Selec’tings, I share with you everything from swimwear for the beach to thrifty statement shirts to sweet casual day looks. Peep the styles and get your bootay in gear while the stores are still open (p.s. most of them have extended hours today, but be sure to call ahead.)
Swim to Swear By
Sexy swimwear designers Tarik & Tif appeared to be on hiatus for a bit but they’re back just in time with a collection of sheer, modern looks for you to show off your sporty summer body. While the designers don’t have a store per say, you can connect with them directly on Facebook or email them at firstname.lastname@example.org to get the swimwear. If you want to hit the stores directly for your swimwear look, Base Kingston & Belle are selling these lovely Belle by Lubica pieces in a crochet triangle top and bottom. Not ideal for the water, but you know, great for looking sexy on the beach. Alter Ego is also providing new swimwear by the second, so be sure to peek your head in there. Two of my local favourites also went hard with redesigns of previous collections for the Easter season: Jae Jolly and Yahdie Conscious. Jae Jolly put together new styles from her “Ocean Floor” collection by throwing fresh patterns into the mix for the “Rays” bikini and “Neon Dori” (pictured below) bikini. She generally has new creations stocked on the racks all the time so it’s worth inquiring what secret treasures she has locked away in her showroom. Yahdie Conscious revisited her popular “Desert Swim” collection with new modern and funky styles. I love the tropical and electric pink crop top two-pieces because they’re just so different from everything else out there right now. Kuddos to Jami for thinking outside of the box.
Shirts that Make you Go, “OH!”
If you don’t have much money to work with, sometimes a new shirt will just refresh your whole wardrobe. We turned to these retailers to find some creative styles in the tops department. RepJA has been releasing new spring styles as of late, but it’s this long-sleeve black and white “Been Blood Clawt Real” number that really caught my eye. Pair it with some booties, a head scarf, some gold chains and short shorts: good to go. If you’re looking for more of a funky look then turn to Massimo in Half Way Tree for a floral shirt with puffy sleeves or extra-wide collar. I additionally love the fresh retro trends from Some like it Vintage, who shared these off-the-wall vintage shirts. Contact them on Facebook or by email to get the looks.
For the Sweeties
Now for the sweeties who just want a casual and colourful look for Easter Weekend. Good news, you can get a splash of fabulousness in the accessories department from Kerry Man Woman Home, as they are now carrying bags from designer Kyu Mélange. Not to be paired with (way too many clashing patterns) but equally fun, are these painterly jumpsuits from Coochi-Anna, which fall completely in line with the artistic brush strokes trend for Spring. I also love this sophisticated bright pink jumpsuit paired with a wide gold belt, on Erica from Style Savvy. For a more youthful look, turn your eyes to the pink lace and floral print shorts. They’ll keep you cool and relaxed. There is plenty more new stock at Style Savvy to swoop in on. Whatever look you decide to go with–maybe you go with multiple– there are definitely excellent options out there for you to snatch up before the weekend really takes off and these looks are sure to help you be stylish on the fly.
