Thursday evening M.A.C. Cosmetics held a press conference announcing placement of their first retail store in Jamaica at the Sovereign Center Mall in Liguanea this November. Senior Artist for the brand, Gisel Calvillo, discussed the store’s long term development and M.A.C.’s interest in the Caribbean market.
“Jamaica has been a project that we have been working on for almost six years, so we understood that the Caribbean woman loves her makeup and that she loves to look glamourous and great,” Calvillo told Kingstonstyle. “M.A.C. has been a very well received brand and there have been so many Jamaican women saying, ‘when are you going to bring it to us’ so it has been a project in the works and is finally being accomplished as of November.”
M.A.C. is an internationally acclaimed cosmetics company with an endless resume on the runway in New York, London and Paris. The brand works with celebraties as far and as wide as Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Elton John, often developing product partnerships with these brand ambassadors so customers may emulate their look. Calvillo described her experience in the M.A.C. environment as an artist behind the counter saying, “you have every possible colour, texture and product you need to be a great artist and having different types of people of every ethnicity gives you practice and confidence.”
The store in Sovereign will follow the same template as other stores worldwide. It will have local M.A.C trained makeup artists available to help customers learn about the products and to assess and help show customers how to develop the look they are trying to create.
While the store opening is the primary focus for M.A.C. at the moment, there is room for further development in the local industry in television, Carnival and fashion week. “There are so many projects that we would like to get our hands on,” Calvillo said, “its really about developing the makeup community and providing everything that makeup artists here on the island need to make their work better.”
